Sumitomo Metals steel plates for shipbuilding are characterized as follows.

1. The Company has obtained approval of steel manufacturing methods in response to standards of main classification societies in the world. We have a system that can satisfy any demand (in terms of grade and plate thickness).

2. All sorts of steel plates for shipbuilding are available that make the most of the Thermo-Mechanical Control Process (TMCP).
Specific name of SMIs TMCP steel
DAC : Dynamic Accelerated Cooling process type (Accelerated cooling type)
SSC : Sumitomo Special Control Rolling process type (Non- accelerated cooling type)
Compared with conventional steel, TMCP steel excels in weldability, and further the base metal and weld joints are very tough in spite of their high strength.

3. Latest products and technical topics
Sumitomo Metals has developed and supplied to customers the following products in response to a variety of needs.

1) Steel for high heat input welding: Thanks to our original material design, good HAZ toughness can be ensured even if high heat input is performed in welding.

2) Steel for low temperature service for LPG carriers: Products are available to meet customers needs.
(1) High heat input welding type: This steel enables HAZ to maintain good low temperature toughness even in large heat input welding.
(2) High TS type: Plate thickness can be reduced due to its high tensile strength of TS≥530N/mm2.
(3) General type: This type excels in low temperature toughness and is applicable to mixed carriers for ammonium.

3) LP (longitudinally profiled plate): Tapered steel plate with longitudinally varying thickness.
The use of LP provides such merits as fewer weld lines.

4) High tensile strength steel with high resistance to fatigue fracture: By controlling the microstructure of the relevant steel, the fatigue crack growth rate can be reduced by half compared with existing steels.
