Steel Plates for Penstocks |

| Electricity is an important energy source since it supports peoples daily lives and industrial activities. As a means to cope with peak demand, construction of pumped storage hydroelectric power stations is being advanced along with expansion in scale. In general, H x D (m x m) is used as the index for expressing the scale of penstock, where D is pipe diameter and H is design water head. With the increase of H x D, higher strength steel plates in the class HT590, HT690 and HT780 have been applied, and the thinner thickness and weight reduction of steel plates have contributed towards reduction of construction period and costs of power station. ![]() * Blue marks indicate hydroelectric power stations where SMI materials were used. Sumitomo Metals development of high tensile strength steel plates for penstocks started with HT690 in 1969. In 1995, we supplied 41-43mm thick HT980 to a Swiss project which employed this kind of steel for the first time in the world after passing a special approval test of HT780 in 1973. Now, we have finished developing such products up to HT980/200mm. Steels for large heat input welding, reduced welding preheating, etc. are also available. |
