2. Outline of Sumitomo Steel Plates for Low Temperature Service
| Sumitomo Standard |
Applications |
SLT285
SLT325A
SLT325B
SLT360 |
Low-carbon Al killed, fine-grain steels. SLT285and SLT325 are normalized. SLT325B and SLT360 are quenched and tempered.
Excellent low temperature notch toughness, low carbon equivalent, excellent weldability and toughness in weld zone. Most suitable for reaction vessels in the chemical industry, storage tanks and carriers of liquefied gas, and other low temperature services. Adequate for use around temperatures from -45°C to -60°C. Manufacturing steel plates with excellent low temperature performances is possible by application of the TMCP process (DAC) substituting for normalizing or quenching and tempering. |
| SLT2N255 |
This is a low-carbon Al-killed, fine-grain steel normalized with 2.10~2.50%Ni added. Notch toughness at low temperature is remarkably improved by addition of Ni. Weldability is splendid. It is used at temperatures approximately down to -70°C as reaction vessels in the chemical industry and storage tanks for liquefied gas. |
SLT3N255
SLT3N275
SLT3N440 |
By addition of 3.25~3.75%Ni to low-carbon Al killed, fine-grain steel, SLT3N255 and 275 are normalized, while SLT440 is quenched and tempered. Their notch toughness is improved further than SLT255, because of an increased amount of Ni addition. Their weldability is also extremely good.
As for SLT3N440 , reduction in thickness in design is possible owing to its higher strength than ASTM203 Grade D and E.
They are appropriate for use at temperatures down to -80°C~-101°C. For example, low temperature pressure vessels such as towers in ethylene plants (demethanization), low temperature storage tanks of liquefied ethane gas and liquefied ethylene gas and heat exchangers in the chemical industry. |
SLT9N-520
SLT9N-590 |
They are 9%Ni steels with addition of 8.50~9.50%Ni to low-carbon Al killed, fine -grain steel and with heat treatment of quenching and tempering or double normalizing and tempering to be used for extremely low temperature services with second best low temperature toughness after austenitic stainless steel.
We provide SLT9N-520 and SLT9N-590 of this kind that correspond to ASTM A353 and ASTM A553 type 1, respectively.
They are used for extremely low temperature services such as storage tanks of liquefied natural gas, and most adequate for use at extremely low temperature down to -196°C. |
