Steel Plates for Low-Temperature Service
To cope with such situations, Sumitomo Metals has established an excellent system, preparing a variety of steel plates ranging from Al-killed steel to 9% Ni steel since the early days of its foundation so that each customers' needs could be immediately satisfied. Additionally, base metals and welding joints are assured of their stable toughness which is the most important property of steel plates for low-temperature services. SMI inspected stability of structures whenever required, striving to accumulate a lot of data. On top of that, diversification of processes was fully considered and a wide variety of options have been introduced to cope with any performance required. In addition to controlled rolling and conventional heat-treatment like normalization and QT, many other processes including our original manufacturing technologies such as DAC (Dynamic Accelerated Cooling) are freely used to produce superior products. As a result, SMI's steel plates for low-temperature services are rich in variety since there are those which are standardized by not only domestic JIS and WES but also overseas ASTM, ASME, BS, DIN, StahlEisen, etc., and ship classifications, not to mention Sumitomo Standard products of "SLT" series. Since our low-temperature service steel plates are produced, based on our ripe experience and various study achievements, we firmly believe that they will continue satisfying your demands and fulfilling your expectations. 1. Any kind of steel plates ready for any low-temperature services SMI is ready to provide any kind of steel plates with various properties for services at temperatures ranging from low to ultra low so that customers can choose the best option that satisfies any need required in such terms as design stress and temperature. As is the case with an LPG spherical tank, if such steel plate is required that excels in toughness in low temperature and has higher strength, SMI has set a standard for 590N/mm2 high tensile strength steel plates for low-temperature services as SUMITEN-LT steel plates in the SUMITEN series. 2. Featuring high-toughness brought about by our own technology SMI put the SHT (Sumitomo High Toughness) process into operation in its Kashima Steel Works, the first of its kind in the world, in August 1975, signifying a success in providing steel plates that feature excellent low-temperature toughness. In addition, SMI developed the DAC (Dynamic Accelerated Cooling) process as accelerated cooling technology after rolling. Furthermore, it combined the latest TMCP (Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Process) technology with conventional controlled rolling and heat-treatment to make a new system. As a result, all processes are available to satisfy any needs of our customers. 3. Base metal and welded joints fully assured of stable toughness Our company is fully prepared for providing higher-toughness base metal and obtaining stable-toughness welded joints for low-temperature structures under any welding condition. Further, brittle fracture properties were inspected with the assumption of actual structures in mind, based on various kinds of data from experiments such as double tensile tests, COD tests, etc. As safety is assured in such ways, customers can use our products without worry. 4. Strict quality control under perfect quality assurance system Materials are used which are obtained under the management system of integrated iron- and steel-making. In each process, quality control is thoroughly conducted in addition to process control by large computers so only products of stable quality can be delivered. 5. Excellent dimensional accuracy and flatness Accuracy of plate thickness has substantially improved by powerful rolling stands and automatic gauge control. On top of that, dimensional accuracy has increased by use of measuring equipment on the rolling and finishing lines. Meanwhile, careful attention is being paid to control corrugation which is destined to occur when a 4-high plate rolling mill is used. In addition, a powerful hot leveler is being used to supply substantially flat steel plates. 6. Superior surface condition Plates are completely descaled by steam jet during rolling as well as a high-pressure descaler. Heat-treatment is conducted in a non-oxidizing heating furnace. Quenching is continuously performed by roller quench after heating. Walking beams are being used for heating slabs and conveying plates. Thus, we can provide steel plates with excellent surfaces. |
