The amount of slag, dust, and sludge generated from steel production in fiscal 2010 was 5.56 million tons. We recycled slag, which accounted for 88% of this amount, primarily as a raw material in various iron and steel slag-based products, and we recycled dust and sludge as raw materials in the steelmaking process.

The "RC resource circulation furnace" dust reduction kiln processes dust generated from electric furnaces and other facilities, and recycles it as steelmaking raw materials.

Pipelines to carry natural gas must withstand corrosion. “Super 13 Cr Steel,” which we invented, has excellent corrosion resistance. Its application started at North Sea in 1996 and we have now supplied more than 500 km of these pipes.

Increasingly high performance flat-screen televisions are generating growing amounts of heat, and the parts which dissipate this heat have become highly important. Sumitomo Metals has developed a coated steel sheet with heat dissipating performance that is close to the theoretical limit. This material has been adopted by Panasonic because it is much thinner than the conventional aluminum material while retaining the necessary heat dissipating performance, and yields a large decrease in the amount of CO₂ emitted during the manufacturing process.

The Kalina Cycle power generating system is a revolutionary new technology that uses a water-ammonia mixture medium to recover low-temperature (100°C or less) waste heat for use as electric power. This waste heat had previously been difficult to recover. We are working to develop a high-efficiency heat exchanger, integrated thermal recovery system, and other components to overcome the challenge of lowering equipment cost.
